Embracing Imperfection: My Story

Hi, I’m Aaron Hokanson. My journey has been marked by struggles with self-doubt and the quest for self-love. I’d like to share how embracing my imperfections has reshaped my life and brought me to a place of greater self-acceptance.

Battling Perfectionism in Graphic Design

As a graphic designer, I held myself to incredibly high standards. I believed I had to be perfect in everything I did, and any flaw felt like a reflection of my worth. This mindset trapped me in a cycle of self-criticism and fear, leaving me terrified of taking risks or sharing my work. I was constantly worried that any mistake would expose my weaknesses to the world.

For years, I believed that my worth depended on others' approval. I sought validation from friends, clients, and colleagues, thinking their praise was the key to my happiness. But through a lot of introspection, I realized that the most crucial validation comes from within. I needed to show myself the same kindness I extended to others and accept that I was enough, flaws and all.

Navigating Social Anxiety and Depression

In addition to my struggles with perfectionism, I also faced social anxiety and depression. These invisible battles often made me feel isolated and overwhelmed, turning simple tasks into daunting challenges. Life felt like a constant uphill battle, and I desperately needed a way to break free.

In early 2023, I made a life-changing decision to work with a personal life coach. This choice became a turning point for me. Through our sessions, I learned the importance of setting healthy boundaries, being kind to myself, and embracing my imperfections. I gained valuable tools to navigate life's ups and downs, manage my mental health, and confront my fears with courage.

Creating Selfhoot: A Platform for Empowerment

This transformative journey inspired me to create Selfhoot—a platform dedicated to empowering others who face similar struggles. Through Selfhoot, I channel my creativity and passion for personal growth into products designed to inspire and uplift. Each item serves as a reminder of the power of self-love and the beauty of imperfection.

Selfhoot is more than just a business; it's a community. It's a space where people can find support, encouragement, and the reassurance that they are not alone in their struggles. The products I design are meant to be more than just items—they are symbols of resilience, hope, and the ongoing journey toward self-acceptance.

Finding Joy in Life's Adventures

Outside of design, I find joy in the simple things and experiences that make life meaningful. I love spending time with friends and family, cherishing those moments of connection and laughter. Playing board games is a fun way to bond and create lasting memories, while being in nature provides a peaceful retreat that helps me reflect and recharge. I also have a passion for traveling, exploring new places, and experiencing different cultures. These adventures broaden my perspective and add richness to my life.

Finding joy in life is about appreciating the little things—whether it’s a quiet walk in the park, a heartfelt conversation, or a spontaneous game night. These experiences remind me of the importance of balance and taking time for self-care, allowing me to embrace every part of life’s unpredictable adventure—flaws, uncertainties, and all.
